Ozone Depleting Substances
A term used to denote those substances released by human activities which react with and destroy the ozone molecules in the ozone layer of the stratosphere. The main ozone depleting substances are the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and the halons, both of which are groups of chemicals that are extremely stable in the troposphere, with typical lifetimes of 60 to 100 years. Once the CFCs or halons migrate into the ozone layer, the ultraviolet radiation there is strong enough to break the molecules apart, releasing chlorine atoms (CFCs) or bromine atoms (Halons) which react with and destroy ozone.

The output is yes if at least one input is yes.
Of or related to a substance that contains carbon atoms linked together by carbon-carbon bonds. All living matter is organic. The original definition of the term organic related to the source of chemical compounds, with organic compounds being those carbon-containing compounds obtained from plant or animal sources, whereas inorganic compounds were obtained from mineral sources. Compounds containing bonds between carbon atoms can now be made in the laboratory and industrially by man.

Over Voltage Protection
The chemical process of joining oxygen with another element. In semiconductors, oxidation means the joining of oxygen and silicon to form silicon dioxide (SiO2).
Usually refers to silicon dioxide in semiconductor terminology.
The removal of silicon dioxide.
An element that is used in the formation of silicon dioxide.
A large area over Antarctica discovered ten years ago to have a seasonal drop in stratospheric ozone concentration of as much as 50 percent. A similar hole has been found more recently over the Arctic. It is linked to the formation of stratospheric ice clouds that release chlorine atoms from chlorofluorocarbons during the Antarctic winter. The chlorine is present in quantities that cause extensive ozone depletion when the spring and summer sunshine return.
An area of the stratosphere, about 20 to 50 kilometers in altitude, where the intensity of short-wavelength ultraviolet light from the sun (between 130 and 200 nanometers) is sufficiently high to convert normal diatomic oxygen (O2) to ozone (O3). The ozone thus formed provides a measure of protection to plant and animal life on the surface of the Earth because it absorbs ultraviolet radiation at wavelengths that are mutagenic (about 250 to 270 nanometers).
Triatomic oxygen. A reactive gas produced by lightning or photochemical reactions in the troposphere (the latter leads to the presence of ozone in photochemical smog) and by the absorption of ultraviolet radiation in the lower stratosphere (this leads to the formation of the ozone layer). In sufficiently high concentrations at ground level, the gas acts as an irritant to eyes and respiratory tract. It is also suspected of affecting plants, especially in the initial stages of their growth.
